Choosing to study abroad in Spain and Portugal was one of the best decisions I could have made during my undergraduate career at Tech. The Spain/Portugal program instilled in me a new sense of independence while teaching me to integrate into the Spanish and Portuguese cultures. Dr. Bowman made sure that we lived like true citizens of the Iberian Peninsula rather than touristy college students just passing through for the summer.
At first, I was nervous about studying abroad. I like to know what's going on all the time, but study abroad is about going with the flow. It's better that way, trust me. I got to explore the cities that I was in without the constraints of an overly structured program. I learned so much about the places I was in, the subjects I was studying, the locals, the language, and most of all, myself. I would recommend Dr. Bowman's study abroad programs to anyone, especially if you want to learn more than books and lectures.
I can't believe how many great meals and cultural activities were paid by the Coca-Cola Foundation support.
Valencia is such an easy city to travel cheap to the rest of Europe. We could subway to the airport and take super discount airlines to places like Morocco, Rome, Paris, and more. There were lots of long weekends for exploring.
Loved living by a gorgeous beach. A Mediterranean beach is a dream spot to study.
The summer I spent studying abroad was my favorite semester at Georgia Tech. Spain and Portugal are beautiful and interesting countries, and traveling around to different cities was the best (and most fun!) way to learn about their cultures and politics. I also met some of my best friends on the trip. Everyone should do this program!
Studying abroad with Dr. Bowman and Dr. Snell was one of the best experiences of my college career. I got to learn not only so much in the classroom but also outside the classroom. Also, there were so many activities that you could decide to participate in from dancing to going to the opera to eating different cuisines to exploring a museum. There was something for every type of person to participate in, and the great thing was that most of the activities were paid for. I strongly recommend studying abroad with Dr. Bowman and Dr. Snell if you want to learn a lot but also have great and fun experience in amazing countries.
The Spain/Portugal program helped me connect my international affairs studies with my surroundings. Overall I gained cultural and self awarenesses that I would never have experienced without study abroad. With this program you are able find yourself amidst the stories of two nations with profound histories through the food that you eat, the sites that you see, and the classes that you take. I loved my experiences and how they allowed me to connect with both Portugal and Spain. I have carried my study abroad experience with me as I've pursued other endeavors at Georgia Tech. For example, this study abroad program built foundations of social awareness and independence that were necessary for me to intern in Washington, DC for a full semester the school year after that summer. In other words, this program helped me to adapt to experiences outside of my comfort zone and gave me the confidence to pursue another experience outside of Georgia Tech. Dr. Bowman is a wonderful professor to study abroad with. His personalized approach of presenting the course work allows you to obtain a very thorough, independently satisfying experience of being abroad. I wouldn't have had my experience any other way!
